Former CIA Agent Says ‘Blockchain Is The Biggest Threat To America’

05 Jan 2019

In the past one year, we as a cryptocurrency community heard a lot about adoption and so called ‘experts’ talk about how bitcoin was a bubble and how it was going to burst. However, most of the people including big time players have all agreed on one thing- blockchain is the way forward. Now, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer, Andrew Bustamante, stated the converse- That blockchain technology will be the biggest threat and “whoever manages to figure out the technology first wins.”In a Reddit thread dedicated to Bustamante’s ‘Everyday Espionage’, the former intelligence official talks about the riskiest missions he has been on, and how much does the US government knows, among other things. In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session he was asked, “What do you think is the biggest threat to America national security in the coming years? Russia climate change Iran North Korea or something else?”Bustamante said, “Block-chain technology. No joke. Super powerful stuff, and the first one to figure out how to hack it, manipulate it or bring it down wins.” His answers were met with assent with one user saying, “Seems like Australia may agree with you – when Craig Wright claimed to be Satoshi(alias of bitcoin creator(s)) his house was raided pretty quickly.”Of course, that comment gave rise to a whole new discussion wherein one user asked the former CIA agent, whether he meant blockchain or quantum computing to which Bustamante remarked, “Fair enough.”Another user said, “FWIW Quantum computing is highly misrepresented and over exaggerated in many ways – Except for one. Math. It will fundamentally change mathematical computing forever. Will it make your computer into a super powerful AI? Nope… But akin to adding a video card which crunches math better than your CPU in order to render video, quantum computing will most likely end up as an add-on to traditional computing platforms/technology which will vastly increase our ability to crunch numbers quickly. This means cryptography will be forever altered. So programming errors aside, quantum computing will likely enable us to ‘crack the block chain’. Also , Andrew is totally right on the first one to crack it wins…. Please google around and checkout the existing cases of theft. Biggest heists in history are now all blockchain oriented in terms of monetary value.”While that in itself is shocking, given how blockchain is one of the strongest, immutable technologies in existence today, it does bode well for people to reflect if it can be hacked into.Liked what you read?
