US District Court Foils Craig Wright’s Attempt To Squash Case

Self-proclaimed inventor of Bitcoin, Craig Wright’s motion to get the case squashed against him was denied by US District Court.News portal Bloomberg reported that in a hearing, US District Judge Beth Bloom ruled Thursday that the federal court in Florida has jurisdiction over the case, contrary to what Wright assumed. However, the judge didn’t address the merits of the claims.To give a little background, the estate of Wright’s former partner David Kleiman had accused Wright of stealing thousands of bitcoin. In May this year, a United States District Court of the Southern District of Florida issued an order on May 3, which compelled Wright to produce a list of his bitcoin public addresses.The court had stated in its order, “Dr. Wright filed an unverified motion in which he identified a number of bitcoin public addresses that he mined. Although not delineated as a Motion for Protective Order, that is what the pleading is. Dr. Wright asserted that he does not have a complete list of the public addresses he owned on any date, including December 31, 2013. He further asserted that in 2011 he transferred ownership of all his bitcoin to a blind trust. Although he makes the conclusory statement that it would be unduly burdensome to produce a list of his bitcoin holdings as of December 31, 2013, this conclusion is not supported by facts. In essence, he does not argue undue burden, he argues impossibility. The argument that Dr. Wright is incapable of providing an accurate listing of his current or historical bitcoin holdings was never presented in any of the prior hearings before this Court, when the Court was crafting the scope of discovery.”Following that, in June, Wright requested the court to not force him to make an appearance. Judge Beth Bloom, said, at the time, “Personal appearance by the parties will promote meaningful participation at mediation.”In July, Wright was alleged of offering falsified proof of his identity.
